Heritage preservation programs
Preserving culture by keeping language, tradition, and story alive across generations.
Preserving culture
Heritage preservation at Kicheko Project is not about the past—it is about continuity.
For many immigrant families, language, traditions, and cultural knowledge are at risk of being lost as generations navigate new systems and environments. Our Heritage preservation programs create spaces where culture remains living, practiced, and shared—across ages and experiences.
When culture is disconnected from daily life, people often experience loss of identity, belonging, and confidence—especially youth growing up between worlds.
Kicheko was created in response to this gap. Our community asked for more than one-time celebrations; they wanted spaces to learn, remember, and pass culture forward in ways that feel accessible and relevant today.
African language education
Introductory and conversational classes in various African languages that support communication, cultural pride, and intergenerational connection.
For many immigrant families, language loss creates distance between generations and erodes cultural identity over time. By creating accessible language learning spaces, Kicheko helps bridge that gap and restore a sense of continuity.
Participants benefit by gaining confidence in speaking and understanding their heritage language, strengthening family bonds, and developing pride in their cultural identity. These classes also create shared learning spaces where elders, parents, and youth can connect through language together.

Cultural workshops
Cultural sessions centered on history, tradition, music and food—led by community members and cultural practitioners.
Many immigrants rarely find spaces where their culture is centered rather than explained or simplified. These workshops exist to affirm cultural knowledge as valuable and worthy of preservation, while making it accessible in ways that fit modern community life.
Participants benefit by deepening their understanding of cultural traditions, building relationships through shared activities, and experiencing culture as something alive and evolving—not something frozen in the past.

Storytelling & Knowledge sharing
Opportunities to share lived experiences, histories, and traditions in affirming spaces.
In many immigrant communities, stories are passed informally and risk being lost amid displacement and silence. Kicheko recognizes storytelling as a powerful tool for healing, preservation, and community connection.
Participants benefit by being heard, validated, and remembered. Storytelling strengthens identity, fosters empathy, and allows community members to see their experiences not as isolated struggles, but as shared narratives that matter.

What community members say
"Attending Roots and Punchlines was a powerful reminder of what community-centered programming can look like at its best. Kicheko Project created a space that was not only entertaining, but deeply meaningful—bringing people together through culture, humor, and honest conversation. Denis and his team are doing important work that strengthens community connection across our region."
- Deputy Mayor Eben Pobee, City of Shoreline
"Kicheko Project is playing a critical role in uplifting and supporting our youth. Their programs create safe, empowering spaces where young people can express themselves, connect with their culture, and build confidence. This is the kind of community-led work that makes a lasting difference."
- Councilmember Mohamed, Seattle/Tukwila Area
